My daughter has applied to two universities with deferred entry till 2012, she now wishes she hadn’t asked for this gap year and wants to start this year. (Mainly due to the increase in fees). However she has been told she cannot do this as she has already applied. Is there anything she can do. Apparently there are only these two unis that do the course she wants to do.

If your daughter applied this year for deferred entry in 2012, it is my understanding that she will be subject to 2011 tuition fees rather than the new regime. If she wishes to amend her original decision to apply for deferred entry she should do contact the universities concerned direct, in the first instance. Universities will only be able to accommodate the request if they have available space and this could be problematic. It is entirely at the discretion of the universities and if there is not enough space in 2011, the original offers would then remain for 2012 entry only.
However, if the new fees are the only problem, I think you will find that they may not be the disincentive for deferring entry as arrangements are going to be put in place to make sure people like your daughter are not penalised. There are unlikely to be many places in Clearing this year and your daughter should think very carefully about keeping the offers she has. If she were to re-apply next year the same transitional arrangements on fees would not be available and she would be liable to the new 2012 rate
