How do UCAS points work?

Asked by

I am a student from Poland and I would like to apply for a UK university through the UCAS system. I have checked the "League Tables" and there is given a number of points that is required by each university.

I have found information that applicants are normally expected to achieve three A Level passes or equivalent. I found somewhere that A level pass = 120 points in UCAS system and it is the best grade anyone can receive, but

3 A level passes give us 360 points only and many universities want more than that, for example University of Southampton requires 407 points. Does this mean I need to pass 3 of my exams with A level plus 1 exam with for example B level? Could you tell me how many points will give me A, B, C level passes on Polish "Matura Exam"?

The UCAS Tariff is an attempt to determine equivalence between qualifications.  However, not all international qualifications are included in the UCAS Tariff.  Go to http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/ucas_tariff/qualifications.
Another useful website is http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/.  Try also http://www.naric.org.uk/index.asp?page=16.  You should also contact university admissions offices direct for guidance.  Their contact details can be found in the University Profiles section of our website.  Go to http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=6623.
