Universities have the discretion where their admissions are concerned, so there is much variation in entry criteria between courses and between universities.  University websites are very helpful in providing general guidelines about their requirements but these should be treated as guidelines.  If you have non-standard qualifications, you should contact a few university admissions offices direct giving as much information as you can about your education, qualifications and work experience.  They should be able to give you some indication of whether you are suitably qualified for the course you’re interested in.  Application to all UK undergraduate degree courses is online to www.ucas.com. You only have five choices so you don’t want to waste one by not meeting the course entry criteria.  It is important to do your homework on choosing your course and choosing your university.

  • Check your eligibility for the position - Particularly for jobs in the public sector/government, applicants must be Australian Citizens, or less frequently permanent residents
  • Be positive - Focus on what you can do and what skills you have, rather than apologising for a lack of local experience. Your overseas education and experience are just as valid when addressing the selection criteria
  • Your cultural background could be an advantage - Your experiences of other cultures/languages/countries will have served to shape your interpersonal skills, your communication skills and your maturity/life experience show how this could benefit the role you are seeking
